A plan to reopen eastern Ontario’s largest conferencing centre may be underway as a job fair is being held Wednesday.

The Nav Centre, which is hosting residents affected by wildfires in northern Ontario, has said an announcement on reopening will be made once the plan is finalized.

“The Nav Centre, including all of our outlets, remains closed to the public at this time,” said Brittany Ezard, a marketing manager, in an email.

The Glengarry Inter Agency Group announced on July 22 that it would be holding a job fair for the Nav Centre on Wednesday, Aug. 4, at its 950 Boundary Rd. location from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. This suggests the Nav Centre either needs staff members to adequately tend to the over 500 people living in its accommodations, or requires them for a reopening of its facilities to the public at large.

The jobs listed included cooks, housekeepers, security guards, beverage and food servers, and front desk attendants. The centre, in addition to the hotel and conferencing centre, is also home to the Propeller Restaurant, Jet Set Pub and the Nav Fit and Nav Spa.

Many of the same positions are also posted by Sodexo on the online job service Indeed, including a full-time position for food and beverage supervisor.

Nav Canada has been tight-lipped about its post-pandemic plans for the centre, whose hotel, restaurant, and accommodations are contracted out to Sodexo. Prior to welcoming the Northern Ontario evacuees, the only sustained presence within the facility was the Canadian Forces School of Aerospace Control Operations and the Nav Canada Training Institute.

The centre was closed to the public last March, after the federal and provincial governments declared COVID-19 a pandemic and began enforcing restrictions.

Prior to closing, the Nav Centre had hosted just over 120 passengers from the Diamond Princess, a cruise ship that got locked down in Japan after passengers aboard caught COVID-19 and the ship was quarantined. The centre had remained open to the general public during the time the quarantined passengers were present, with certain areas inaccessible.

Aside from the conference and accommodation facilities, the Nav Centre is also home to the other indoor pool in Cornwall, located within the Nav Fit portion of the facility.
